Pakistan and Iraq Strengthen Military Ties, Focus on Air Force

The recent high-level meeting between Iraqi and Pakistani military officials marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral defense relations, particularly in the aviation sector. This encounter highlights the growing strategic partnership between the two nations and their commitment to enhancing military capabilities through mutual cooperation.

The meeting focused on expanding collaboration in military training, with a special emphasis on the aviation sector. This indicates a shared interest in developing human resources and operational capabilities. Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu outlined Pakistan Air Force’s comprehensive modernization plan, which includes procurement of advanced technology from allied countries, upgrading critical infrastructure, restructuring training programs, and enhancing indigenization efforts. These initiatives aim to address contemporary air warfare challenges, showcasing Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a modern and effective air force.

Pakistan Air Force reaffirmed its commitment to assist the Iraqi Air Force in various areas, including upgrading human resources, improving maintenance parameters, and enhancing operational training. This support demonstrates Pakistan’s role in contributing to the development of allied air forces in the region. Tangible cooperation has already been demonstrated through the recent delivery of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft and support equipment to Iraq, as well as a payment of 20 Million USD from Iraq to Pakistan, boosting Pakistan’s economy.

Looking towards future collaboration, Iraq expressed interest in acquiring JF-17 Thunder fighter jets and potentially purchasing an additional 12 Super Mushak Trainer aircraft. The two nations are also exploring maintenance and lifecycle support from PAF. Plans are in place for PAF to provide advanced training to Iraqi Air Force personnel in pilot training, air defense, and cyber technology. These programs are set to commence soon at various PAF institutes, indicating a deepening of practical cooperation.

The Iraqi delegation’s visit to the National Aerospace Science & Technology Park showcased Pakistan’s progress in aerospace research and development. This visit highlighted Pakistan’s growing capabilities in indigenous technological advancements in the aerospace sector.

This meeting represents a significant step in strengthening military ties between Pakistan and Iraq, with a particular focus on air force cooperation. It underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing modern defense challenges and promoting regional stability. The expanded collaboration in training, technology sharing, and potential equipment sales suggests a long-term commitment to this strategic relationship, benefiting both nations’ defense capabilities and broader regional security.
