ASELSAN’s ASELBUOY P Enters Serial Production

ASELSAN has officially initiated serial production of the ASELBUOY P, a next-generation NATO A-size passive directional sonobuoy. This milestone represents a critical enhancement of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities and an expansion of underwater domain awareness, highlighting ASELSAN’s engineering supremacy in naval defense technology.

Precision Engineering and Underwater Target Detection

The ASELBUOY P is a compact sensor system measuring 915 mm in length and 120 mm in diameter, with a total weight of exactly 10 kg. It is meticulously engineered to detect, track, and classify elusive underwater threats across a wide acoustic frequency band of 5 Hz to 2400 Hz. Because modern submarines often exploit ocean temperature variations to hide in “acoustic shadow zones,” the ASELBUOY P allows operators to bypass these thermal layers by programming the acoustic sensors to operate at depths of either 30 meters or 150 meters.

DIFAR Technology for Directional Intelligence

At the core of the ASELBUOY P’s detection capability lies Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) technology, which utilizes a specialized acoustic vector sensor. Instead of merely detecting the presence of a sound, this sensor suite combines an omnidirectional hydrophone (measuring scalar acoustic pressure) with two orthogonal dipole sensors (measuring the acoustic particle velocity vector). This enables the system to instantly calculate the precise directional bearing of an underwater threat. With an extraordinary acoustic sensitivity of 122 ± 3 dB re 1 µPa, the ASELBUOY P can detect the faintest mechanical rumbles from ultra-quiet submarines.

Advanced RF Communication and Telemetry

Once the ASELBUOY P lands on the water via a stabilized parachute, it splits into a submerged acoustic sensor array and a surface float that houses advanced communications equipment. To relay high-fidelity data to command centers without signal interference, it features 96 selectable VHF channels (136 MHz – 173.5 MHz) with a nominal 1-watt output, offering a communication range of up to 20 kilometers. Furthermore, the system includes a single-channel UHF command receiver operating on 291.4 MHz. This allows operators to send remote commands to the buoy post-launch, adjusting its parameters dynamically and selecting an operational lifespan of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours before the expendable unit automatically scuttles.

Pioneering UAV Integration with the ASELBUOY POD

Traditionally, sonobuoys have been deployed from highly expensive manned Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) or ASW helicopters. ASELSAN has disrupted this legacy paradigm by developing the ASELBUOY POD, a modular launcher engineered specifically for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). When integrated with platforms like the TUSAŞ Aksungur drone—which boasts a wingspan of nearly 79 feet, a 40,000-foot ceiling, and a massive endurance of roughly 50 hours—navies can conduct persistent, unblinking ocean surveillance without risking human crews. ASELSAN CEO Ahmet Akyol recently confirmed that live dropping tests from UAVs are imminent, a move he described as an absolute “game-changer” for naval operations.

Artificial Intelligence and Networked ASW Ecosystems

To process the immense volumes of acoustic data gathered by fields of ASELBUOY P sensors, ASELSAN is collaborating directly with the Turkish Naval Forces to establish a dedicated Artificial Intelligence acoustic signature center. By training machine learning models on vast datasets of real-world operational acoustics, the system will autonomously identify and classify specific submarine and surface vessel types based on their unique sound profiles.

Additionally, the ASELBUOY P is designed to integrate seamlessly into multi-static sonar networks, acting as a distributed passive receiver grid that complements shipborne active systems like ASELSAN’s DÜFAS long-range towed sonar. By mastering complex acoustic physics, resilient RF telemetry, and cutting-edge unmanned drone integration, ASELSAN’s mass-produced ASELBUOY P ensures absolute maritime supremacy and secures a dominant technological edge in the future of naval warfare.
