UAE Launches First FALAJ 3 OPV Built By ADSB
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) marked a significant achievement in its naval modernization efforts with the launch of the first FALAJ 3-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV). Constructed by Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), a subsidiary of EDGE Group, the vessel was unveiled during a ceremony held at ADSB’s shipyard. This milestone represents a crucial step in fulfilling a major contract with the UAE Ministry of Defence (MOD) and underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing its maritime defense capabilities.
A Landmark Event
The launch ceremony was held under the patronage of Rear Admiral Pilot Staff Major General Sheikh Saeed bin Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Commander of the UAE Naval Forces. Attended by military officials, dignitaries, and senior executives from EDGE and ADSB, the event celebrated the culmination of years of expertise, collaboration, and innovation.
“The launch of the first FALAJ 3 vessel reinforces ADSB’s expertise in shipbuilding and represents a major step forward in delivering cutting-edge, highly sophisticated vessels equipped with the latest mission systems and advanced armament.”
David Massey, CEO of ADSB, highlighted the significance of this achievement:
This launch is not just a technical achievement but also a testament to ADSB’s dedication to supporting the strategic objectives of the UAE Ministry of Defence through innovation and advanced engineering.
The FALAJ 3 Project
The FALAJ 3-class OPVs are part of a contract valued at AED 3.5 billion (~$950 million), awarded to ADSB in May 2021. This represents the largest single order in the company’s history. ADSB partnered with Singapore’s ST Engineering for the design and technical support of these vessels. The project involves the construction of four OPVs, all based on the proven design of the Fearless-class patrol boats from ST Engineering.
These vessels are engineered for stealth, with features that minimize radar cross-sections, infrared signatures, and acoustic profiles, ensuring a low detectability at sea. The advanced design makes them ideal for a range of missions, including surveillance, defense, and search-and-rescue operations.
Technical Specifications
The FALAJ 3 OPVs are highly versatile and equipped with state-of-the-art systems. Key specifications include:
- Length: 60 meters
- Beam: 9.5 meters
- Draught: 2.6 to 3.4 meters
- Displacement: Approximately 641 tonnes (fully loaded)
- Max Speed: Over 26 knots, powered by four high-performance engines and propellers.
- Range: 2,000 nautical miles at 16 knots.
- Crew Capacity: 39 personnel.
Additionally, the vessels are equipped with an integrated platform management system, enabling centralized monitoring and control of all platform systems. Safety and firefighting equipment are also integrated, along with a rigid-hull inflatable boat for rapid deployment during missions.
Strategic Implications
The FALAJ 3-class OPVs are designed to bolster the UAE’s maritime defense capabilities, ensuring the protection of territorial waters and supporting regional security operations. With advanced armament, cutting-edge mission systems, and stealth features, these vessels are expected to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the nation’s interests in the Arabian Gulf and beyond.
The modular design of the FALAJ 3-class vessels provides operational flexibility, allowing them to adapt to diverse missions, from patrolling and reconnaissance to counter-piracy and humanitarian assistance.

The Road Ahead
The first FALAJ 3 OPV marks the beginning of a transformative era for the UAE Navy. With the remaining three vessels in the series slated for completion by the late 2020s, the UAE is set to further cement its position as a regional maritime power. This project also reflects ADSB’s growing capabilities as a leader in the Middle East’s shipbuilding industry and its ability to deliver advanced, locally produced solutions.
The launch of the first FALAJ 3-class vessel underscores the UAE’s strategic focus on self-reliance, innovation, and military strength. It highlights a new chapter in the nation’s naval history, paving the way for enhanced maritime security and regional stability.
