Switzerland Selects IRIS-T for Sky Shield
Switzerland has taken a significant step toward bolstering its national air defense capabilities by selecting the German-made IRIS-T air defense missile system. According to an official announcement on the Swiss Army website, the Swiss Defense Procurement Agency has finalized this strategic choice as part of the country’s commitment to the European Sky Shield Initiative, marking a new chapter in Switzerland’s defense modernization efforts.
Selection of IRIS-T System
Negotiations for the acquisition are now entering their final stages, with Switzerland planning to purchase between 4 and 5 IRIS-T SLM (Surface-Launched Medium Range) systems. This procurement represents a crucial component of Switzerland’s broader strategy to enhance its air defense infrastructure while aligning with European defense cooperation frameworks.
The Federal Department anticipates signing the formal contract in the third quarter of 2025, as both parties continue to finalize terms following Switzerland’s practical evaluation of the system’s capabilities. This timeline reflects the thorough approach the Swiss authorities are taking to ensure the system meets their specific defense requirements.
Comprehensive Testing of IRIS-T Components
Between March 31 and April 11, 2025, the Swiss military conducted extensive testing of the TRML-4D radar, a critical component of the IRIS-T air defense battery. These evaluations took place at two strategic locations: the Homberg range and the Emmen airfield test site, where the radar was subjected to various operational scenarios.
During these tests, multiple aircraft types including PC-12, PC-7, and F/A-18 jets, as well as helicopters, simulated approaches to the system. These simulations provided valuable data on the radar’s target detection effectiveness across different aerial threats, confirming its suitability for Switzerland’s defense needs.
Expanded Production Capacity for IRIS-T Missiles
The selection comes at a time when German manufacturer Diehl Defense is expanding its production capabilities for IRIS-T surface-to-air missiles. The company recently held a ceremony to commence construction of a new facility in the municipality of Nonweiler. This facility will house both the company’s technology center and dedicated production sites for guided missiles, including the surface-to-air variants that Switzerland will acquire.
This production expansion signals growing European demand for advanced air defense systems in response to evolving security challenges across the continent.
Modernizing Swiss Air Defense
Switzerland’s acquisition of the IRIS-T system falls under the broader Ground-Based Air Defense Medium Range (GBAD MR) project, a comprehensive procurement program designed to modernize the Swiss Armed Forces’ air defense capabilities. This initiative addresses several critical objectives:
- Closing existing capability gaps against long-range aerial threats
- Ensuring effective engagement of medium-range targets using the newly acquired IRIS-T system
- Expanding ground-based air defense capabilities through integration with the Patriot system
The multi-layered approach demonstrates Switzerland’s commitment to developing a robust and versatile air defense network capable of responding to diverse aerial threats in an increasingly complex security environment.

European Sky Shield Initiative Integration
By selecting the IRIS-T system as part of the European Sky Shield Initiative, Switzerland strengthens its defense cooperation with European partners while maintaining its traditional neutrality. This initiative aims to create a more integrated and effective air defense network across Europe, allowing participating nations to benefit from shared resources, expertise, and interoperability.
The Swiss decision represents a significant endorsement of the German-made system, which has gained recognition for its advanced capabilities in detecting and neutralizing various aerial threats, from aircraft to missiles, reinforcing Switzerland’s position in the evolving European security architecture.
