Italy Plans to Buy 25 Additional F-35s in $7 Billion

Italian government has earmarked 7 billion euros ($7.79 billion) for the acquisition of 25 additional F-35 fighter jets in 2024. This substantial investment underscores Italy’s commitment to modernizing its military forces and maintaining a strong presence in NATO and European defense initiatives.

Expanding the F-35 Fleet

The proposed procurement, pending parliamentary approval, will expand the Italian Air Force’s F-35 fleet to an impressive 115 aircraft. This new order includes 15 conventional takeoff F-35As for the Italian Air Force and 10 short takeoff vertical landing F-35Bs, evenly split between the Air Force and Navy. The package also covers engines, equipment, and logistics support through 2035, ensuring long-term operational readiness.
