China Showcase Z-10ME Attack Helicopter at AAD Exhibition

China has unveiled its Changhe Z-10ME attack helicopter at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2024 exhibition. This surprise appearance marks a major statement in China’s push to expand its influence in the global defense market, particularly in Africa.

Z-10ME: A Technological Marvel

The Z-10ME, an upgraded version of China’s first dedicated attack helicopter, represents a leap in combat helicopter technology. Key features include powerful WZ-9G engines delivering 1,200 kW, enhanced armor and avionics, a chin-mounted 23 mm cannon, a nose-mounted electro-optical pod, millimeter-wave fire control radar, 1,500 kg weapons capacity, and the capability to carry HJ-10 anti-tank missiles. These improvements significantly enhance the helicopter’s combat effectiveness in modern warfare scenarios.

Strategic Implications of Z-10ME’s Appearance

China’s decision to display the Z-10ME at AAD 2024 signals several strategic intentions: expanding defense exports to Africa, competing in the global attack helicopter market, and demonstrating technological parity with Western counterparts. The helicopter’s arrival via a Xian Y-20A heavy transport aircraft further emphasizes China’s logistical capabilities.

International Market Prospects

While Pakistan is rumored to be the first export customer, China is actively targeting markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South America. This diversification strategy aims to establish China as a major player in the international defense industry.
