YJ-20 Hypersonic Missile Launch Footage: China’s Type 052D Destroyer Fires Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile
New footage circulating online appears to confirm something defense analysts have anticipated for months: China has fired its YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missile directly from a Type 052D destroyer’s vertical launch cells. Unlike prior test-range shots or parade displays, this clip shows a warship firing the missile at sea a milestone that reshapes how the PLA Navy’s surface fleet is understood as a long-range strike threat. This isn’t a test range shot from a fixed launcher or a rendering pulled from a military parade this is a warship doing it in a real, at-sea launch.
The launch platform identified in the clip is a Type 052D Luyang III-class destroyer, one of the PLA Navy’s core surface combatants. The ship itself isn’t the headline the missile leaving its deck is.
The YJ-20 is China’s hypersonic glide-vehicle anti-ship ballistic missile (AShBM), purpose-built to threaten large surface combatants including carrier strike groups at extended range. Analysts estimate a cruise speed above Mach 6, with a terminal dash speed as high as Mach 10 during the glide vehicle’s final approach. Range estimates place the YJ-20 between 1,000 and 1,500 kilometers, putting it well outside the effective reach of most carrier air wings before they could respond.
The real story is in the launch tube. The Type 052D uses the same HT-1 universal vertical launch system (VLS) found on the newer Type 055 cruiser, including the deeper 9-meter cells designed to house larger munitions. The YJ-20 measures roughly 8.43 meters in length with a 0.76-meter booster diameter dimensions that fit inside a 9-meter VLS cell with room to spare.
That compatibility is the whole story here: the YJ-20 doesn’t require a new ship class. It slots into a vertical launch system China has already fielded across dozens of hulls.
This is where the story stops being about a single destroyer and becomes a fleet-wide question. China currently operates more than 25 Type 052D destroyers, with production ongoing. Add the Type 055 cruisers already confirmed as YJ-20 capable and the combined total climbs past 40 major surface combatants theoretically able to carry the missile.
That’s not a niche capability limited to a handful of specialized ships. It’s a hypersonic anti-ship threat distributed across the majority of China’s modern blue-water surface fleet, with each vessel able to draw from a shared magazine of long-range strike options depending on the mission.
Targeting a moving target at range. A missile with this range needs over-the-horizon sensor cueing — satellite tracking, maritime patrol aircraft, or reconnaissance drones — to actually hit a moving carrier group. The VLS cell solves the “can it be fired” problem. It does not, on its own, solve the harder problem of finding and hitting a maneuvering target 1,200 kilometers away.
Possible interceptor crossover. Some analysts speculate that if China fields an X-band seeker on this airframe or a derivative, the HQ-19 exo-atmospheric interceptor architecture could eventually borrow from the same missile family for a dual-role concept. This remains speculative, but it’s worth watching given how much commonality China has already built across its VLS-launched weapons.

Strip away the specific performance numbers and the takeaway is straightforward: China isn’t building one exquisite carrier-killer aboard a handful of ships. It’s building magazine-depth hypersonic strike capacity that scales across its entire modern destroyer and cruiser fleet, using vertical launch infrastructure it has already put to sea.
