Aselsan Elevates Turkish Aerospace with Indigenous AESA Radar
Türkiye’s defense industry has reached a new pinnacle with Aselsan’s unveiling of its AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) Aircraft Nose Radar, a groundbreaking advancement developed entirely from domestic resources. This state-of-the-art radar technology is poised to redefine the capabilities of Turkish combat aircraft, enhancing their operational efficacy and securing Türkiye’s position as a formidable player in the global defense technology arena.
A Leap in Combat Aircraft Technology
The AESA Aircraft Nose Radar, which successfully completed its initial flight aboard the F-16 Özgür, is set to significantly boost the combat capabilities of Turkish aircraft. By integrating this advanced radar technology, the F-16 Özgür is elevated to a 4.5-generation aircraft. Meanwhile, future applications in the KAAN fighter jet and Unmanned Aerial Combat Vehicles (UACVs) are expected to push these platforms into the fifth generation and beyond, incorporating advanced capabilities and stealth features.

A Triumph of Turkish Engineering
Aselsan’s meticulous preparation for mass production of the AESA radar in Ankara symbolizes a landmark achievement in Turkish manufacturing and integration capabilities, from the minutiae of chip fabrication to the complexities of advanced aerospace integration. This technological leap is not limited to combat aircraft like the F-16 Özgür, Hürjet, and KAAN but also extends to cutting-edge Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as the Akıncı and ANKA-3, promising a significant enhancement in the operational capabilities of Turkish aerial platforms.
AESA Radar to Take to the Skies
With the AESA Aircraft Nose Radar set to commence flight tests aboard the Akıncı and other UAVs within the year, Türkiye is on the cusp of a major breakthrough in avionics and aerospace technology. This initiative is backed by the full support of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), highlighting a national commitment to self-reliance and technological sovereignty in defense capabilities.
Global Impact and Market Potential
Aselsan’s AESA radar technology not only solidifies Türkiye’s defense capabilities but also positions the nation as a key competitor in the global aerospace market, estimated at $5 billion annually for fighter aircraft radars alone. With ongoing export negotiations, Aselsan’s radars are set to expand Türkiye’s footprint in the air defense, naval platforms, and surveillance radar markets.
A Cornucopia of Capabilities
The introduction of AESA radar technology into Turkish aerospace is not just about enhanced detection and targeting. This system brings a suite of capabilities including automatic recognition, multitarget tracking, ground mapping, and advanced electronic warfare capabilities, bolstered by AI-driven algorithms for heightened operational efficiency.
