A Familiar Voice Is Not Proof: Introducing HUMAS ID

HUMAS ID gives people a separate way to check contacts made in an organisation’s name before continuing a conversation or agreeing to a meeting.

“Hello, I am calling on behalf of your organisation.” A familiar name, a confident voice and a plausible reason for calling can make an unexpected contact seem credible. Yet none of these, on its own, establishes who is speaking. For the person receiving the call, the practical question is simple: how can I check this contact independently of what the caller says?

That question matters to organisations as well as individuals. A customer may hesitate to answer a legitimate call. An employee may receive an unexpected invitation from someone claiming to represent a partner. A meeting may be proposed in a company’s name without the recipient having a clear way to check the approach. Trust becomes difficult when the same words can be used by both authorised staff and impersonators.

HUMAS ID addresses this gap through a shared process for connected organisations and individual participants. An organisation applies, is reviewed before joining and appoints authorised staff. Individuals use their own HUMAS ID accounts and decide whether to accept a connection with that organisation. The service provides web accounts for both sides; access is free for individual participants.

A clearer way to arrange a conversation

The first scenario begins before a call or meeting takes place. An authorised employee selects a connected participant and sends a request stating the proposed date and time. For a meeting, the request also includes the location.

The recipient opens HUMAS ID independently, reviews the organisation and the proposed arrangements, and accepts or declines. Both sides can see the response, while the request and its details remain available in the account. Accepting an invitation means agreeing to the proposed conversation or meeting; it does not confirm that the event has already taken place.

This gives an organisation a consistent way to introduce an intended contact and gives the recipient time to review it without relying solely on an incoming call or message.

Checking an unexpected contact

The second scenario applies during a call. The participant opens HUMAS ID and starts a contact check for the connected organisation that the caller claims to represent. The authorised employee conducting that conversation responds through the organisation account and reads out the displayed code. The participant enters the code in their own account and reviews the comparison result.

A matching code shows access to the organisation account for that check. It does not verify the caller’s telephone number, authorise a payment or establish that every statement made during the conversation is true. The participant remains free to end the call and contact the organisation through a previously known channel. HUMAS ID does not require people to give a caller their passwords or sign-in codes for other services.

The purpose is to make a specific contact check possible and understandable, with the decision remaining in the person’s hands.

Start with one working scenario

For an organisation, implementation can begin with a small team and a defined group of participants. They can try arranging calls or meetings, practise contact checks, gather feedback and assess how the process fits their everyday work. The organisation account provides requests, responses, history and notifications, with staff working according to their assigned roles.

Organisations can discuss pilot use and a suitable annual plan. Installation and adaptation of the module within an organisation’s own infrastructure are considered individually following a compatibility assessment. The public HUMAS ID page includes an explanatory PDF and a way to discuss participation.

When an organisation asks people to trust a contact made in its name, providing a way to check that contact is a practical place to start.
