MKE TOLGA Air Defense System Debuts in Europe
Türkiye’s state-owned defense manufacturer MKE has marked a major milestone as the MKE TOLGA Air Defense System Debuts in Europe at Eurosatory 2026, one of the continent’s most prestigious defense industry exhibitions, held this year in Paris, France. The unveiling follows a strategic partnership with Hungary’s HT Division, which has resulted in the successful integration of the TOLGA Close-In Air Defense System onto the Hungarian-developed KATICA 6×6 unmanned ground vehicle.
A New Chapter for Türkiye’s Defense Exports
The partnership was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed within the scope of the SAHA 2026 project. As a result, engineers from both countries moved quickly to integrate TOLGA’s 20mm weapon system onto the KATICA platform, completing the first phase of the program in record time. This rapid execution reflects MKE’s broader strategy of strengthening its global presence through joint development rather than simple export sales.
MKE, recognized as Türkiye’s oldest and most established defense industry company, has consistently pushed to place its domestic and national technologies on international platforms. The Hungarian collaboration is the latest example of that effort, and it signals a deliberate shift toward deeper European engagement.

How the Integration Works
In its current configuration, the KATICA unmanned ground vehicle carries TOLGA’s 20mm weapon system, combining autonomous ground mobility with layered, short-range counter-UAS capabilities. This pairing is particularly well suited to protecting critical infrastructure, where persistent, mobile coverage is often more valuable than a single fixed installation.
Beyond the initial weapon fit, the agreement between MKE and HT Division extends to joint engineering work, system adaptation studies, and training for technical personnel. In other words, this is not a one-time hardware sale but an ongoing technical relationship between the two companies.
Future Upgrades Planned for TOLGA on KATICA
Looking ahead, several additional subsystems are planned for integration onto the Hungarian platform, including:
- A 12.7mm remote weapon station
- The ENFAL-17 missile system
- A laser weapon module
- An acoustic detection suite
- An electronic warfare jammer
Once these upgrades are complete, the platform will offer a genuinely layered air defense solution, capable of detecting, tracking, and engaging threats across multiple ranges and methods, rather than relying on a single weapon type.
Expanding Global Reach Beyond the Middle East
The timing of this announcement is notable. Earlier in 2026, MKE signed significant cooperation agreements with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt covering joint production and export of the TOLGA system. With the Hungarian project, MKE has now extended TOLGA’s international footprint into Europe, demonstrating that the system can adapt to different host platforms beyond its original design.
This matters for two reasons. First, it shows that European defense companies are willing to integrate Turkish-made weapon systems onto their own indigenous platforms. Second, it positions TOLGA as a credible, exportable solution for countries seeking flexible, mobile air defense rather than only static installations.
Why This Partnership Matters
The combination of TOLGA’s layered air defense capabilities with the high mobility of an autonomous ground platform creates options that neither company could offer alone. Potential use cases range from protecting critical facilities and securing borders to escorting mobile units and supporting unmanned system operations in contested environments.
For Hungary, the partnership brings an advanced, combat-relevant weapon system onto a domestically built unmanned vehicle. For Türkiye, it reinforces the message that the MKE TOLGA Air Defense System Debuts in Europe not as a one-off showcase, but as the start of a long-term industrial relationship with one of the region’s growing defense technology hubs.
Looking Ahead
As integration work continues, both companies are expected to expand the KATICA platform’s capabilities in stages, adding the remaining TOLGA subsystems over time. If the program progresses as planned, it could serve as a template for similar collaborations with other European partners, further cementing Türkiye’s position as a serious player in the continent’s defense supply chain.
