China’s J-15T and J-15D Debut Jointly at Zhuhai 2024

China’s naval aviation reached a milestone as the J-15 series carrier-based aircraft conducted adaptive training in Zhuhai. The event marked the first public appearance of the J-15D electronic warfare aircraft flying alongside the advanced J-15T, demonstrating China’s growing carrier-based combat capabilities.

In a spectacular aerial display, the J-15D positioned itself above its counterpart during formation flight. The two-seat J-15D, designed as a carrier-based electronic warfare platform, integrates sophisticated electronic jamming capabilities with strike functionality. According to CCTV Military expert Li Jian, the J-15D represents a significant advancement over the traditional J-15, featuring upgraded avionics, optimized body structure, enhanced weapon systems, and improved adaptability for operations from newer Chinese aircraft carriers.

The J-15T, distinguished by its straight-line radar cover, has emerged as the world’s most powerful non-stealth carrier-based fighter. Its most significant upgrade is a large-aperture active phased array radar system, featuring gallium nitride TR components. The nose diameter approaching one meter enables superior detection capabilities compared to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

During the demonstration, both aircraft showcased their “buddy refueling” capabilities, highlighting their extended operational range. The J-15T features the domestically produced WS-10 Taihang engine, specially modified for naval operations with enhanced corrosion resistance. Its redesigned landing gear system incorporates specialized towing and limit rods for catapult operations, while straight-line wingtip pylons enable compatibility with advanced missiles like the PL-10.

The joint appearance of these advanced carrier-based fighters demonstrates China’s significant progress in naval aviation technology. As core elements of future aircraft carrier formations, the J-15D’s electronic warfare capabilities combined with the J-15T’s advanced combat features create a formidable combination for modern naval operations. This historic display not only showcases China’s current naval aviation capabilities but also signals its growing sophistication in carrier-based operations.
