Iran's 4000km Range 'Kamikaze' Drone: Strategic Game Changer

US Army Awards $1B for Switchblade Kamikaze Drones

The US Army has signed a massive contract worth nearly $1 billion with AeroVironment for the delivery of Switchblade series loitering munitions, also known as kamikaze drones. This five year deal is part of a larger effort to enhance the lethality of infantry units, making them as effective as formations with heavy armored vehicles.

The contract covers both Switchblade 300 and 600 models. These tube-launched loitering munitions offer highly automated target engagement capabilities and man in the loop control functionality. The Switchblade 300 has a range of up to 30 kilometers and a 20-minute flight time, while the larger 600 model can reach targets up to 40 kilometers away with a 40-minute endurance.

This acquisition reflects the Army’s push to field kamikaze drones in greater numbers, especially within infantry units. Loitering munitions provide dismounted formations with new ways to engage various targets beyond the reach of traditional man-portable weapons, offering increased lethality and safety.

The contract falls under the Army’s Lethal Unmanned Systems (LUS) Directed Requirement, formalized in 2022. It’s linked to programs like the Low Altitude Stalking and Strike Ordnance (LASSO) initiative, aimed at making Infantry Brigade Combat Teams as lethal as Armored Brigades.

The investment in loitering munitions reflects a global trend, influenced by observations from conflicts like the war in Ukraine. These weapons are expected to play a crucial role in potential high-end conflicts, especially in scenarios involving Taiwan’s defense against a potential mainland invasion.

This billion-dollar contract for Switchblade drones signifies a major shift in U.S. military strategy, emphasizing the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern warfare. It also positions the U.S. to potentially supply these advanced weapons to allies and partners, further expanding their global impact.
