Greece’s 35 Black hawk helicopters acquisition
In a groundbreaking move, Greece has solidified a major defense agreement with the United States, securing the acquisition of 35 UH-60 Black hawk helicopters. Valued at an impressive $1.95 billion (€1.78 billion), this deal, facilitated by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), marks a pivotal moment for the Greek Land Forces.
A Shift towards Cutting-Edge Technology
The acquisition of these UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters signifies a remarkable upgrade for the Greek military, replacing the aging Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopters. These new multirole helicopters boast state-of-the-art technology, including missile warning systems, embedded global positioning systems, and advanced communication and radio systems.
Originally considering the PZL Mielec S-70 variant from Poland, Greece ultimately opted for US-made helicopters through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process. This decision underscores a strategic alignment with cutting-edge capabilities and underscores Greece’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities.

Naval Enhancement with MH-60R Seahawk Helicopters
In tandem with the land forces upgrade, Greece is set to fortify its naval capabilities by incorporating seven MH-60R Seahawk helicopters into its fleet. Complementing the existing S-70B “Aegean Hawk” helicopters, these additions will contribute to a more robust and versatile naval presence in the region.
Exploring Further Options for Military Aviation
Beyond the Black Hawk acquisition, Greece is actively considering the purchase of 14 AW-139 helicopters from Italian manufacturer Leonardo. Intended for combat search and rescue missions, these helicopters would replace the existing Super Puma fleet, with the AW-139 standing out for its alignment with the operational needs of the Hellenic Air Force.
A Naval Renaissance Frigates Spearheading the Greek Navy
In a separate development, the recent launch of the first frigate, named “Kimon,” signals a naval renaissance for Greece. Alongside “Nearchos” and “Formionas” frigates, the Kimon frigate is poised to lead the Greek Navy. Expected to sail in Greek waters by 2025, these frigates represent stability, peace, and a projection of power in the Aegean, Eastern Mediterranean, and the broader region.
Greece’s strategic defense upgrade reflects a commitment to modernizing its military capabilities, ensuring readiness for evolving security challenges in the region. The acquisition of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, naval enhancements, and potential additions to the aviation fleet position Greece as a key player in regional security and stability.
