China 6th-Gen Fighter Jet Completes Maiden Flight

China achieved a significant milestone in military aviation on December 26, 2024, as its new advanced aircraft completed its inaugural flight at Chengdu Aircraft Corporation’s (CAC) headquarters. The timing of this achievement, coinciding with Mao Zedong’s birthday, adds symbolic weight to what appears to be a major leap forward in Chinese aerospace capability.

The mystery aircraft, substantially larger than existing Chinese fighters, has sparked intense debate among aviation experts worldwide. With approximate dimensions of 30 meters in length and a 20-meter wingspan, it dwarfs the J-20 fighter that accompanied it as a chase aircraft during the test flight. This size differential has become a key point of discussion among analysts attempting to determine whether this represents China’s entry into sixth-generation fighter development or the long-anticipated JH-XX regional bomber program.

One of the most striking features of the new aircraft is its propulsion system, consisting of three engines – an unusual configuration that suggests significant advances in Chinese aero-engine technology. Two squared intakes are positioned below the wing, with a third intake uniquely placed above the fuselage behind the cockpit. While the specific engine type remains unknown, speculation centers around variants of China’s indigenous WS-15 or WS-19 engines, which are currently under development for other advanced aircraft programs.

The aircraft’s design philosophy embraces modern stealth considerations, featuring a flying wing layout devoid of vertical tail surfaces. Its diamond wing configuration incorporates a delta section, whose leading edge root extension reaches to the aircraft’s nose. The trailing edge houses multiple control surfaces, including split drag rudders, elevons, and flaps, reminiscent of systems used on the American B-2 stealth bomber, though without the characteristic sawtooth edge treatment.

The timing of this flight follows significant activity at CAC, including the closure of its Chengfei Park facility from December 12-31, 2024. This period of restricted access, particularly notable given the park’s view of the company’s runway, suggests careful planning to manage the secrecy surrounding the project. The flight also comes shortly after the circulation of next-generation aircraft renderings online, which show remarkable similarities to the observed aircraft.

This development carries substantial implications for global military aviation. It places China in direct competition with other major powers developing next-generation aircraft, including the United States’ Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program and Europe’s Global Combat Air Program (GCAP). The aircraft’s appearance may accelerate these programs as Western nations reassess their timelines and capabilities in light of China’s progress.
