Iran Confirms Acquisition Of Russian Su-35 Fighter Jets

Iranian military leadership has officially confirmed the purchase of Russian Su-35 fighter aircraft, marking a significant development in the country’s military modernization efforts. IRGC General Ali Shadmani, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Central Headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces, made the announcement without specifying the exact number of aircraft acquired.

The acquisition represents a major upgrade to Iran’s air force capabilities, aimed at replacing the aging fleet of American-made F-14 Tomcat fighters. According to earlier reports from Flugrevue, the initial order comprised 25 Su-35SE fighters, which was later expanded to 50 aircraft.

Reports indicate that Iran has already received its first two Su-35SE fighters from Russia. These aircraft are expected to be stationed at Isfahan Air Base, replacing the Grumman F-14As that Iran acquired in the 1970s.

General Shadmani also revealed that Iran has successfully tested new air defense systems. These systems were deployed to replace equipment damaged during an Israeli strike on October 26, 2024, demonstrating Iran’s commitment to maintaining its defensive capabilities.

The Iranian military leadership emphasized their commitment to strengthening all branches of their armed forces. General Shadmani stated that Iran would continue to purchase military equipment as needed to enhance its air, land, and naval capabilities.

This military acquisition significantly impacts regional power dynamics and represents a deepening of military cooperation between Iran and Russia. The transfer of advanced fighter aircraft highlights the evolving nature of international defense relationships.
