Turkiye’s Deploys New Indigenous Kamikaze Drone
Turkish defense firm STM Defense Technologies Engineering has delivered its domestically developed Alpagu loitering munition system to Turkish security forces, marking a significant milestone in indigenous military technology advancement. This new indigenous kamikaze drone represents Turkiye’s commitment to defense self-sufficiency and technological independence, as the lightweight precision-strike platform joins operational units across the country. The deployment of this new indigenous kamikaze drone demonstrates Turkiye’s rapidly expanding capabilities in unmanned aerial systems and loitering munition technologies that are reshaping modern battlefield dynamics.
Known as a fixed-wing kamikaze drone, the Alpagu forms part of STM’s comprehensive initiative to supply locally engineered unmanned aerial vehicles capable of enhancing national defense capabilities through lightweight, precision-guided strike systems. Unlike traditional rotary-wing drones, the fixed-wing configuration provides extended range and flight efficiency while maintaining compact dimensions suitable for individual soldier deployment. This design philosophy prioritizes operational flexibility and tactical responsiveness in diverse combat environments.
STM General Director Özgür Güleryüz emphasized in a Friday statement that the company’s family of tactical UAVs, developed with advanced engineering capabilities to meet national security needs, continues strengthening operational effectiveness across Turkish forces. He expressed confidence that Alpagu will further enhance field performance by providing soldiers with immediate precision-strike options. The delivery underscores STM’s commitment to translating sophisticated engineering into practical battlefield solutions that address real-world operational challenges.
According to STM, Alpagu was first exported in 2023, demonstrating international confidence in Turkish defense technology. The current delivery supports domestic use, reinforcing STM’s strategic intent to field cost-effective loitering munition options to both Turkish and allied forces worldwide. This dual-track approach of serving national requirements while building export markets reflects Turkiye’s broader defense industry strategy of achieving economies of scale through diversified customer bases.
The drone is named after a historic Turkish term meaning “a brave man who attacks the enemy alone,” symbolizing its operational concept of individual soldier empowerment through precision firepower. Weighing less than two kilograms and measuring under one meter in length, the system can be rapidly deployed and operated by a single soldier without requiring extensive support infrastructure. Its compact airframe and guidance systems are fully developed in-house by STM engineers, with particular emphasis on reduced radar signature, modularity, and intuitive field operation.
Alpagu integrates wide-angle electro-optical and infrared imaging payloads, enabling effective day and night operations across engagement ranges extending to eight kilometers. The drone’s internal algorithms designed using national image processing and deep learning technologies support autonomous flight navigation while maintaining target selection and strike control under human supervision. This human-in-the-loop approach ensures ethical engagement protocols while leveraging artificial intelligence for enhanced operational performance.
In its operational profile, the system supports diverse tactical missions including counterterrorism operations, cross-border engagement scenarios, and urban conflict environments. With flight endurance of 15 minutes and cruise speed of 20 meters per second, Alpagu operates at altitudes between 80 and 200 meters above ground level. Its 270-gram warhead provides effective terminal impact against both fixed installations and mobile targets, making it suitable for engaging personnel, light vehicles, and fortified positions.
According to STM’s product description, Alpagu remains undetected by targets until the final engagement moment, then destroys objectives with precision accuracy using its onboard warhead. This stealth characteristic results from the drone’s small size, low acoustic signature, and ability to approach from unexpected angles. The element of surprise combined with precision guidance maximizes lethality while minimizing collateral damage risks in complex operational environments.
The drone incorporates features including MIL-STD-331 compliant ammunition safety mechanisms, mid-mission retasking capability, and autonomous self-destruct function. The launch and control systems are engineered to perform reliably in harsh field conditions, with the ground control unit offering full sunlight readability, comprehensive water and dust resistance, and MIL-STD-810G environmental compliance. These military-standard certifications ensure dependable performance across extreme temperatures, humidity levels, and operational stresses.
The system’s mesh communication architecture allows multiple Alpagu platforms to be managed simultaneously from a single ground control station, enabling coordinated missions across land, sea, or airborne deployment environments. This swarm capability multiplies tactical effects by overwhelming enemy defenses through synchronized attacks from multiple vectors. Operators can orchestrate complex engagement sequences involving numerous drones working in concert to achieve mission objectives.
