Ukraine To Get Additional Leopard 2 Tanks From Spain
In a move to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities amid ongoing conflicts, Ukraine to get additional Leopard 2 tanks from Spain main battle tanks to the country. This decision underscores Spain’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense efforts and sovereignty, as the nation continues to face aggression.
Contractor and Overhaul Process
General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) Santa Bárbara Sistemas has been chosen for the crucial task of refurbishing and restoring 19 Leopard 2A4 tanks. The extensive overhaul, taking place in Alcalá de Guadaira, Seville, will ensure that the tanks are battle-ready, highlighting the thorough process of inspection, disassembly, replacement of defective parts, and functionality assurance.

Timelines and Logistics
The Spanish Ministry of Defense has outlined a timeline for the delivery of these tanks, aiming to augment Ukraine’s armored forces by September 2024. This endeavor reflects Spain’s strategic efforts to provide timely and effective military assistance to Ukraine, following an initial contribution of Leopard 2A4 tanks in the previous year.
Governmental Approval and Future Plans
This initiative has received the green light from the Interministerial Board for Trade and Control of Defense Material and Dual-Use Technologies (Jimddu), indicating a coordinated governmental approach to support Ukraine. With the refurbishment of the first ten tanks expected to conclude by June, and the rest by September 2024, Spain is positioning itself as a steadfast ally to Ukraine in these turbulent times.
