Pakistan Plans to Order Four New Ships from China
Pakistan is set to embark on a significant maritime development journey by ordering four new ships from abroad for the first time in the nation’s history. This strategic decision marks a pivotal moment for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) and signals a comprehensive approach to modernizing the country’s maritime capabilities.
Expanding Maritime Capabilities
PNSC Chairman Sultan Chawla revealed that a delegation will travel to China to finalize the ship order. The groundbreaking initiative involves purchasing ships primarily through Pakistani rupees, with the first vessel expected to be delivered within a year. This procurement is projected to increase the PNSC’s cargo transport capacity by an impressive 40%, representing a substantial leap in the nation’s maritime infrastructure.
Financial and Strategic Implications
The decision to order new ships comes after a prolonged period of maritime infrastructure stagnation. Complementing the new ship acquisition, PNSC has also initiated a process to sell two older vessels, anticipated to generate approximately 8 billion rupees by March. This approach demonstrates a calculated strategy of fleet renewal and financial optimization.
Sustainable Shipbreaking Initiative
Parallel to the ship acquisition, Pakistan has launched the SENSREC-DW project, a comprehensive initiative focusing on safe and environmentally sound ship recycling. The project, a collaboration between the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labour Organization (ILO), aims to transform the ship recycling industry through improved safety, environmental sustainability, and labor standards.
Workshop and Industry Transformation
The inaugural workshop in Karachi brought together 150 participants from various sectors, including government ministries and industry stakeholders. The event highlighted the critical need for training programs and sustainable practices in ship recycling, drawing insights from international conventions and best practices.
Global Regulatory Compliance
The SENSREC-DW project aligns with crucial international regulations such as the Hong Kong Convention and Basel Convention. These frameworks ensure that ship recycling operations meet stringent safety, environmental, and labor standards, protecting both human health and ecological systems.

By addressing technological, economic, and environmental dimensions, the country is positioning itself as a progressive maritime nation.
The simultaneous pursuit of new ship acquisition and sustainable shipbreaking practices demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing its maritime sector.
