Netherlands Orders 3 New NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopters

The Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force has taken a significant step to expand its maritime aviation capabilities. Under a newly signed contract between NHIndustries (NHI) and the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA), the Netherlands will acquire three additional NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopters (NFHs). This addition will reinforce the Dutch Navy’s operational readiness and strengthen the country’s naval aviation fleet.

The NH90 NFH is a versatile platform designed to support a wide range of maritime operations, and the Netherlands’ continued investment highlights its long-standing commitment to the program.

The new NH90 NFH helicopters will be assembled by Leonardo in Italy and delivered with the latest Block 1 configuration, known as Software Release 3 (SWR3). This advanced configuration includes upgraded mission systems, providing enhanced operational capabilities for modern naval operations.

Cristian Naso, Managing Director of NHIndustries, stated, “The three additional NFHs will embed the latest Block-1 features, including Data Link 22, next-generation electro-optical systems, new integrated sonics, and additional weaponry.” These upgrades allow the helicopters to carry out complex missions efficiently, from surveillance to target engagement, while maintaining interoperability with NATO allies.

The Netherlands has been involved in the NH90 program since its inception in 1999. Col. Dominique Troquete, Deputy Joint Executive Committee representative of the Netherlands, emphasized the country’s dedication:

“We received the first NH90 in 2010 and became the first nation to operationally use it in 2013 for counter-piracy operations in Somalia. Since then, the NH90 has proven to be an indispensable asset of the Netherlands Ministry of Defence.”

The latest contract for three additional NFHs marks a continuation of this strategic partnership, reflecting trust in the helicopter’s capabilities and its critical role in Dutch naval operations.

Axel Aloccio, President of NHIndustries, highlighted the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force’s consistent confidence in the NH90 program:

“From the initial investment to develop the platform, securing 20 NFHs naval helicopters, to the recently renewed commitment, the Netherlands has always demonstrated trust in NH90’s capabilities.”

This endorsement strengthens NHIndustries’ position as a key player in NATO maritime aviation programs.

Michael Kohlhaas, General Manager of NAHEMA, emphasized that the acquisition reaffirms the NH90 platform’s reliability and versatility. The new helicopters will enhance national defence capabilities, improve operational readiness, and ensure seamless interoperability with NATO forces.

“The Netherlands’ acquisition represents a long-term investment in defence and industrial cooperation, reinforcing the NH90 program’s strategic importance.”

The upgraded NH90 NFHs are specifically designed for extended-range maritime operations, including:

  • Anti-submarine warfare (ASW)
  • Surveillance and reconnaissance
  • Target identification and engagement
  • Search and rescue (SAR) missions

With SWR3, the helicopters can detect and respond to threats more efficiently while communicating real-time encrypted tactical information with allied assets. This ensures modern interoperability standards are met across NATO maritime operations.

The NH90 NFH has already demonstrated its operational effectiveness with multiple NATO member states. The platform supports a wide array of missions and is recognized for its reliability, versatility, and advanced technology, making it a key asset for maritime defence operations.

By receiving the new aircraft, the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force reinforces its naval helicopter fleet, aligning with NATO’s digital standards and shared systems. This ensures Dutch maritime operations remain coordinated with allied forces and capable of responding to evolving security challenges.

The acquisition of three additional NH90 NFHs strengthens the Netherlands’ maritime capabilities, providing enhanced flexibility and readiness for complex operations. With modern mission systems and digital interoperability, these helicopters ensure the Dutch Navy maintains its edge in maritime defence, supporting NATO operations worldwide.

The Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force now possesses a fleet equipped with cutting-edge technologies, capable of protecting national interests and contributing to global security missions efficiently.
