L&T and Navantia to jointly design and build submarines for India

L&T and Navantia to jointly design and build P75(I) submarines for the Indian Navy. The submarines will be based on Navantia’s S80 class, which is currently undergoing sea trials in Spain. The signing of the TA is a significant milestone for India’s submarine program. It will help to modernize the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet and strengthen its maritime capabilities.
The contract is worth an estimated €4.8 billion ($5.26 billion), making it one of the largest defense contracts in India’s history. It also includes a 30-year lifecycle sustenance contract to ensure the long-term operational readiness of the submarines. The first submarine is expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy in 2028, with subsequent deliveries following at regular intervals.

The P75(I) submarines will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including advanced air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems. These systems will enhance the submarines’ stealth capabilities and enable them to operate effectively in various maritime environments. Additionally, the submarines will have advanced communication and surveillance systems to support their role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests.

The TA was signed in Madrid on July 10, 2023, in the presence of high-level officials from India and Spain. This agreement signifies the close cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense and highlights India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The P75(I) submarines, once commissioned, will be a significant addition to the Indian Navy’s fleet, further bolstering its capability to safeguard India’s maritime borders and ensure regional security.
