Leonardo and Rheinmetall Partner for Next-Gen Armored Vehicles

Italian powerhouse Leonardo and German defense giant Rheinmetall are set to launch a groundbreaking joint venture by the end of September 2024. This collaboration, announced by Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani, marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of land defense systems across Europe.

The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, establishes a new company with equal 50% ownership between Leonardo and Rheinmetall. This strategic alliance aims to catalyze a technological and industrial leap in European land defense capabilities, focusing on the development and commercialization of cutting-edge main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.

The Future Main Battle Tank

At the heart of this joint venture is the development of a new main battle tank (MBT) based on Rheinmetall’s innovative KF51 Panther platform. This advanced MBT is poised to replace Italy’s aging Ariete tanks, bringing state-of-the-art technology to the forefront of armored warfare. The KF51 Panther, known for its superior firepower, protection, and mobility, will serve as the foundation for a tank that meets the evolving challenges of modern combat scenarios.

Advanced Infantry Fighting Vehicle

Complementing the MBT, the partnership will also focus on developing a next-generation infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) derived from Rheinmetall’s KF41 Lynx platform. This new IFV is set to succeed Italy’s current Dardo, offering enhanced protection, mobility, and combat effectiveness for infantry units. The KF41 Lynx’s modular design allows for easy customization to meet specific operational requirements, making it an ideal choice for future-proofing ground forces.

KF41

The KF41 Lynx represents the pinnacle of IFV design. With dimensions of 7.73 meters in length, 3.6 meters in width, and 3.3 meters in height, it strikes an optimal balance between size and maneuverability. Weighing approximately 44 tons, the vehicle is powered by a robust Liebherr diesel engine delivering an impressive 1,140 horsepower. This powerplant enables the Lynx to achieve a top speed of 70 km/h (43 mph) on roads, ensuring rapid deployment and tactical flexibility.

Cutting-Edge Features for Modern Warfare

The KF41 Lynx is equipped with a suite of advanced technologies that set it apart in the field:

  1. Modular Armor Protection: The vehicle’s armor can be tailored to specific threat levels, providing optimal protection while maintaining mobility.
  2. Lance 2.0 Turret: This advanced turret system can accommodate either a 30mm or 35mm automatic cannon, complemented by a coaxial machine gun for varied engagement capabilities.
  3. Advanced Situational Awareness: A 360-degree camera system provides unparalleled visibility, while integrated battlefield management systems ensure that crews have access to real-time tactical information.
  4. Versatile Platform: The KF41 chassis can be adapted for various roles beyond infantry transport, including command and control, reconnaissance, and combat engineering.

Impact on European Defense Industry

This joint venture between Leonardo and Rheinmetall represents a significant step towards consolidating and strengthening the European defense industrial base. By combining Italian engineering excellence with German technological prowess, the partnership aims to create a new standard in armored vehicle technology that can compete on a global scale.
