China Unveils World’s Largest Unmanned Cargo Aircraft
Chinese aerospace firm Air White Whale has unveiled its first unmanned cargo aircraft the W5000. This groundbreaking aircraft is not only the largest of its kind globally but also represents a major step forward in the future of cargo transportation.
The W5000, named for its impressive 5-ton payload capacity, features a high-wing design and is powered by two turboprop engines. With a maximum take-off weight of 10.8 tons and a range of up to 2,600 kilometers, this aircraft is designed to revolutionize the cargo industry.
According to Air White Whale, the W5000 is “compatible with standard cargo pallets, adapts to various loading and unloading methods, and can take off and land at general aviation airports and civil aviation airports.” This versatility allows the aircraft to seamlessly integrate into existing cargo transport infrastructure, offering a flexible and efficient solution.
The unmanned nature of the W5000 is a key selling point, as it reduces the manpower requirements for cargo operations. Air White Whale states that a single pilot can monitor up to five of these unmanned aircraft simultaneously, significantly improving the cost-effectiveness and scalability of cargo delivery.
Air White Whale has already submitted certification documents to Chinese regulators and expects to deliver the first W5000 aircraft in the second half of 2026. This ambitious timeline underscores the company’s commitment to bringing this innovative technology to the market.

Backed by the state-linked Changzhou High-tech Jinlong investment firm, Air White Whale was founded in 2021. The company’s management board comprises former executives from industry giants such as Comac, Airbus China, and GE Aviation, bringing a wealth of expertise and industry knowledge to the table.
As the world’s largest unmanned cargo aircraft, the W5000 from Air White Whale represents a significant milestone in the evolution of cargo transportation. With its advanced capabilities, innovative design, and the backing of experienced industry leaders, the W5000 is poised to redefine the cargo sector and pave the way for a new era of efficient and sustainable air freight operations.
