China Navy Commissions Two Advanced Type 052DM Destroyers
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy has significantly strengthened its surface warfare capabilities with the commissioning of two new China Type 052DM destroyers, the Heze (number 126) and Zhumadian (number 127), marking another milestone in China’s naval modernization program. These latest China Type 052DM destroyers represent the most advanced iteration of China’s proven destroyer design, incorporating cutting-edge radar systems and enhanced counter-stealth capabilities that position them among the world’s most sophisticated surface combatants.
New Vessels Join Northern Theatre Command
The Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company delivered both destroyers to the Northern Theatre Command, with the vessels now serving in the 10th and 1st Destroyer Detachments of the North Sea Fleet respectively. The Heze was launched on March 10, 2023, while the Zhumadian followed on August 28, 2023, both completing extensive sea trials before entering active service.
This strategic deployment strengthens China’s naval presence in the northern maritime approaches, providing enhanced coverage of critical sea lanes and potential conflict zones. Type 055 Class Comparison
While the Type 052DM displaces approximately 8,000 tons, China also operates the much larger Type 055 class destroyer, which displaces between 12,000 and 13,000 tons. The Type 055 integrates 112 vertical launch cells compared to the Type 052D’s 64 cells, along with more powerful sensors including an advanced dual-band radar system.
The Type 055 is widely regarded by both Chinese and Western sources as representing the world’s most capable surface combatant class. However, only eight are currently in service with eight more planned, reflecting the higher cost and complexity compared to the Type 052D series.
Comprehensive Weapons Integration
The Type 052DM integrates an impressive array of weapons systems, including YJ-100 cruise missiles with 1,000-kilometer ranges for long-range strike capabilities. YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles provide Mach 3 terminal speeds and complex sea-skimming flight profiles that challenge enemy defense systems.
Multi-layered air defense networks comprise HQ-16, HHQ-9, HHQ-10, and DK-10A surface-to-air missile systems, providing comprehensive protection against aerial threats. Multiple close-in weapons systems offer last-resort defense against incoming missiles and aircraft that penetrate the outer defensive layers.
Hypersonic Missile Capabilities
Reports indicate the destroyers have integrated the revolutionary YJ-21 hypersonic ballistic missile, widely considered the world’s most capable ship-launched anti-ship weapon. This advanced missile system provides unprecedented strike capabilities against enemy surface vessels, including large aircraft carriers and other high-value targets.
The hypersonic missile’s speed and maneuverability make it extremely difficult to intercept using current defensive systems, providing Chinese naval forces with a significant tactical advantage in potential maritime conflicts. This capability represents a quantum leap in naval strike warfare technology.
Advanced Sensor Systems
The Type 052DM incorporates six radar systems and two sonar systems that provide comprehensive situational awareness across multiple domains. These sensors can detect adversaries over the horizon, beneath the sea surface, and at various altitudes, creating a detailed operational picture for commanders.
