Türkiye Touts New ‘Steel Dome’ Multilayer Air Defense Strategy
Türkiye has announced plans to develop an indigenous, multi-layered air defense system dubbed the “Steel Dome Project.” This ambitious initiative aims to create a network-centric, AI-supported, and multi platform integrated shield across large swaths of Turkish airspace, providing an impenetrable defense against missile threats.
For years, Ankara has voiced frustrations over its Western allies’ failure to provide adequate defense against missile threats, despite Türkiye being a NATO member. This led Türkiye to eventually acquire the advanced Russian made S-400 missile defense system, triggering a major row with the United States.
The Steel Dome Project, approved by Türkiye’s Defense Industry Executive Committee, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, seeks to integrate multiple layers of domestic air defense systems, sensors, and weapons under a unified network structure. This includes real-time data delivery to operation centers and the leveraging of artificial intelligence technologies.
Aselsan, a pioneering defense electronics manufacturer, is spearheading the development of the Steel Dome. Other prominent players involved include Roketsan, TÜBITAK Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (SAGE), and Machine and Chemical Industry (MKE).

The air defense network is envisioned to feature four layers: very short range, short range, medium range, and long range, incorporating a variety of Türkiye’s domestically developed systems.
Türkiye’s transformation over the last 20 years has aimed to reduce external dependency on Western arms through innovative engineering initiatives and domestically developed technologies. This drive has led to the development of a range of homegrown air, land, and marine platforms, reducing Türkiye’s foreign defense dependency from 80% in the early 2000s to 20% today.
Türkiye’s defense capabilities, particularly its combat drones, have triggered unprecedented global demand, with defense exports peaking at over $5.5 billion in 2023. This success has also led to an increased representation of Turkish defense firms in the prestigious Defense News Top 100 list, from four companies in 2023 to five in 2024.
Türkiye’s Steel Dome air defense project represents a transformative step in the country’s quest for self-reliance and technological superiority in the defense sector. By integrating domestic capabilities across multiple platforms and leveraging advanced technologies, Türkiye aims to provide an impenetrable shield over its airspace, solidifying its position as a regional and global defense powerhouse.
