Turkey Signs Landmark Air Defense Radar Deal with Aselsan
Turkish defense giant Aselsan has secured a landmark agreement with the Presidency of Defence Industries of Turkey for the supply of advanced air defense radar systems. The comprehensive deal, valued at $170.9 million plus 1.95 billion Turkish lira (approximately $55.49 million), establishes a delivery timeline spanning from 2026 to 2031.
ALP-300G System Capabilities
The contract likely centers around the ALP-300G Portable Early Warning Radar System, formerly known as the ERALP Early Warning Radar System. This advanced S-band radar system represents a significant leap forward in Turkish air defense capabilities. First announced in 2022, the system began delivery to the Turkish Armed Forces in May 2024, marking a rapid transition from development to operational deployment.
Technical Specifications
The ALP-300G incorporates state-of-the-art radar technology, featuring AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) and digital beamforming architecture. These advanced components enable simultaneous multi-beam operations in space, supporting both multi-function and multi-mission capabilities. The system demonstrates exceptional versatility in detecting and tracking various aerial threats, including air breathing targets, ballistic missiles, anti-radiation missiles, and stealth aircraft.
Operational Advantages
The system’s mobility and rapid deployment capabilities make it particularly valuable for modern military operations. Mounted on tactical trucks, the complete system integrates radar, command control/communication, and power systems. A key operational advantage is its swift deployment time of just 30 minutes, enabling quick responses to emerging threats.
Integration Capabilities
The ALP-300G demonstrates impressive integration flexibility with existing military infrastructure. The system seamlessly connects with radar networks, national command and control systems, NATO air command and control systems, and air and missile defense systems. It also includes advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) capabilities, enhancing its effectiveness in complex operational environments.
Strategic Significance
This contract represents more than just a commercial success for Aselsan; it signifies Turkey’s growing capabilities in indigenous defense technology development. As noted by Turkish Defence Industries Secretary Haluk Gorgun, the ALP-300G surpasses existing systems in resolution, range, and accuracy, marking a significant advancement in Turkish military radar technology.
