Russia Bolsters Artillery with New Malva Howitzers

The Russian military has received a fresh delivery of 2S43 Malva wheeled howitzers, enhancing its artillery capabilities. This advanced self-propelled artillery system represents a significant upgrade in Russia’s ground forces’ firepower and mobility.

The Malva is built on the BAZ-6910-027 “Voshchina” chassis, featuring an 8×8 all-wheel-drive configuration. It’s equipped with a 152mm 2A64 rifled gun, the same type used in the 2S19 “Msta-S” howitzer. The design prioritizes mobility by omitting a turret and heavy armor for the gun mount, resulting in a lighter vehicle that can be transported by aircraft such as the Il-76.

The first production models of the Malva were delivered to the Russian Armed Forces on October 26, 2023. Since then, the system has already seen combat action, notably in the Kharkiv region as part of Group “Sever”. In these engagements, the Malva has faced various challenges, including damage from advanced opposing weaponry such as HIMARS-launched M30A1 GMLRS missiles.

The introduction of the Malva howitzer into the Russian arsenal signifies a continued focus on modernizing artillery capabilities. Its ability to be rapidly deployed by air transport adds a new dimension to Russia’s artillery tactics, potentially allowing for quicker responses in various combat scenarios.

The system’s combat experience, while limited, provides valuable data for further refinements and tactical adjustments. As more Malva units enter service, they are likely to play an increasingly significant role in Russian artillery operations.

The delivery of new Malva howitzers underscores Russia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its artillery forces. With its blend of mobility, firepower, and strategic flexibility, the 2S43 Malva represents a notable advancement in modern artillery systems. As these howitzers continue to be integrated into the Russian military, their impact on artillery tactics and overall combat effectiveness will be closely watched by military analysts worldwide.
