Greece Weighs F-16 Transfer to Ukraine Amid Air Force Upgrade

Greece is contemplating a significant move in support of Ukraine’s defense efforts, weighing the potential transfer of 32 older F-16 Block 30 fighter jets to the war-torn nation. This consideration comes as Greece undertakes a major modernization of its own air force, highlighting the country’s commitment to both regional security and NATO alliance obligations. “Greece Weighs F-16 Transfer to Ukraine Amid Air Force Upgrade”.

The Potential F-16 Transfer

The Greek government is evaluating the possibility of transferring 32 F-16 Block 30 fighter jets to Ukraine. These aircraft, while older models, would significantly bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities in its ongoing conflict. This move would not only demonstrate Greece’s continued support for Ukraine but also align with broader NATO efforts to assist the country in defending its sovereignty.

Upgrading Existing F-16s

As part of its modernization program, Greece is upgrading its existing F-16 fleet to the advanced Viper configuration. This upgrade enhances the aircraft’s capabilities, including improved radar systems, avionics, and weapons systems.

Acquisition of New Aircraft

Greece is also in the process of acquiring new fighter jets to modernize its air force:

  1. Rafale fighters: Greece has already received several Rafale jets from France, with more deliveries scheduled.
  2. Potential F-35 acquisition: The country is exploring the possibility of purchasing F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters, which would significantly enhance its air defense capabilities.

Greece’s Support for Ukraine

Greece’s consideration of the F-16 transfer is not its first show of support for Ukraine. In the early days of the conflict, Greece sent military equipment to Ukraine, including:

  • Two C-130 planeloads of rifles, ammunition, and grenades
  • 20,000 Kalashnikov rifles (previously confiscated)

Diplomatic Support

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis demonstrated diplomatic support by visiting Odesa, Ukraine. During this visit, a nearby missile strike occurred, raising concerns about the safety of Western leaders in Ukraine and highlighting the risks associated with supporting the country.

Shifting Greek Public Opinion

The potential F-16 transfer reflects a larger shift in Greek public opinion regarding Russia and the conflict in Ukraine. According to data from Dianeosis, an Athens-based think tank:

  • Before the war: 70% of Greeks had a favorable view of Russia
  • After the 2022 invasion: Favorable view dropped to 50%
  • In 2023: Favorable view further decreased to 30%

This dramatic shift in public sentiment aligns with Greece’s clear support for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Russian Reactions and Warnings

Greece’s support for Ukraine has not gone unnoticed by Russia. The Russian embassy in Athens called on Greek politicians to “come to their senses” and stop “anti-Russian propaganda.” Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zacharova labeled Greece’s decision to send weapons to Ukraine as “deeply mistaken” and “criminal,” warning of potential consequences.

As Greece continues to modernize its air force and considers transferring F-16s to Ukraine, it finds itself playing an increasingly important role in regional security dynamics. This developing situation underscores the complex geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, with Greece balancing its national defense needs against international support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
