Boeing Wins NGAD Deal For F-47 Fighter Jet
Boeing has secured the highly competitive contract to develop the US Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter jet, now officially designated as the F-47. President Donald Trump announced this landmark decision on Friday, describing the sixth-generation aircraft as having “state-of-the-art stealth technologies [making it] virtually unseeable.” This advanced fighter will replace the aging F-22 Raptor and represents a crucial development in America’s air superiority strategy.
A Revolutionary Combat System
The F-47 will form the centerpiece of a comprehensive “family of systems” that includes autonomous drone wingmen, known as collaborative combat aircraft (CCA). “It’s something the likes of which nobody has ever seen before,” President Trump stated during the Oval Office announcement. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin emphasized that the F-47 will be “the most advanced, lethal and adaptable fighter ever developed,” signaling a transformative approach to aerial warfare.
Technological Leap Forward
According to military officials, experimental versions of the NGAD have been flying for five years, accumulating hundreds of testing hours to validate cutting-edge concepts. The aircraft will feature unprecedented stealth capabilities, enhanced maneuverability, increased payload capacity, and adaptive engines that optimize thrust and efficiency based on mission requirements. This technological maturity positions the F-47 as “truly the world’s first crewed sixth-generation fighter,” directly challenging China’s claims regarding its J-36 program.
Major Victory for Boeing
The NGAD competition ultimately came down to Boeing and Lockheed Martin, after Northrop Grumman withdrew from consideration as a prime contractor in 2023. This win represents a critical opportunity for Boeing, which has faced significant challenges across both its civilian and military aviation programs in recent years. Steve Parker, interim president of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, noted that the company made “the most significant investment in the history of our defense business” in preparation for this mission.
Strategic Impact
Industry experts view Boeing’s selection as beneficial for America’s defense industrial base, ensuring that all three major U.S. aerospace contractors now have programs developing advanced stealth aircraft. Doug Birkey, executive director of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, highlighted the importance of this diversification: “For the country, that’s a really important thing, to have that innovation, that competition and frankly, the volume production.”

Contract Structure
The engineering and manufacturing development contract uses a cost-plus incentive fee structure, similar to the approach taken with Northrop Grumman’s B-21 Raider. Under this arrangement, Boeing will mature, integrate, and test all components of the F-47, producing several test aircraft before potential transition to low-rate initial production. Gen. Allvin indicated the aircraft could be flying by the end of Trump’s administration, significantly faster than traditional fighter development programs.
