Spike NLOS Clears Path for Precision in US Army Apache
In a groundbreaking live fire demonstration at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, Lockheed Martin successfully showcased the capabilities of the Spike NLOS (Non-Line Of Sight) Long Range Precision Munitions Directed Requirement (LRPM DR) system on the U.S. Apache AH-64E V6 attack helicopter. This significant achievement marks a crucial step toward enhancing the precision and accuracy of the U.S. Army’s Apache fleet.
Unlocking Precision Spike NLOS Integration
Lockheed Martin’s successful firing of eight Spike NLOS all up rounds over a five-day period not only demonstrated the system’s mission set capabilities across diverse scenarios but also cleared the LRPM DR system for Airworthiness Release (AWR) for the U.S. Apache platform. This accomplishment paves the way for the integration of the Spike NLOS system onto the U.S. Army’s Apache V6 platforms, with the expectation that all 18 Apache Echo Model V6 platforms will be equipped by September 2024.

Premier Defense Capability
Tom Bargnesi, program management senior manager of the Precision Strike team at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, emphasized the significance of the successful demonstration, stating, “This showcases that the system is ready to be integrated onto the Army’s current Apache fleet and provides a premier defense capability of choice when precision and accuracy matter.” The AWR ensures the delivery of 21st-century security solutions to the Army, particularly in complex threat environments.
Apache AH-64E V6 A Modern Configuration
The Apache AH-64E V6 stands as the most modern configuration of the Apache attack helicopter, tailored for the Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) battlefield. Equipped with a network-centric, fully integrated weapon system, the Version 6 Apache boasts enhancements in sensors, software, and weapons performance. Its interoperability within the Joint All Domain Operations (JADO) ecosystem positions it as a lethal, survivable, and agile asset crucial for current and future joint mission success.
Spike NLOS Supporting Future Vertical Lift (FVL)
The Spike NLOS missile aligns with the U.S. Army’s third modernization priority—Future Vertical Lift’s signature effort, the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA). As the Army moves forward with its modernization initiatives, the Spike NLOS system, showcased on the AH-64E as a surrogate FARA, emerges as a critical component supporting the Army’s evolving needs.
Training and Fielding Mid-2024 Milestone
Looking ahead, Lockheed Martin plans to collaborate with the Army in mid-2024 to initiate training sessions for pilots on using the Spike NLOS system on the Apache V6 platforms. This comprehensive approach ensures that the integration process is complemented by adequate training, maximizing the effectiveness of the advanced precision munitions system.
Lockheed Martin’s successful live fire demonstration of the Spike NLOS system on the U.S. Apache AH-64E V6 marks a significant leap forward in the Army’s capabilities. As the integration progresses, the Spike NLOS system is poised to become a cornerstone in the U.S. Army’s arsenal, delivering unparalleled precision and effectiveness in complex operational environments.
