Slovakia to Purchase Israeli-Made Air Defense Systems
Slovakia has announced plans to acquire six Israeli-made Barak MX surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems. This €554 million ($612 million) deal marks a major upgrade to Slovakia’s air defense capabilities and signals a deepening of defense cooperation between the two nations.
Key Details of the Acquisition
The Slovakian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that the intergovernmental agreement for this substantial purchase is expected to be finalized by the end of October. The total investment of €554 million will secure six Barak MX SAM units for the country. According to Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, the first deliveries of these systems are anticipated to begin in late 2025, with the goal of having the first systems fully operational by early 2026.
Strategic Importance
This acquisition represents more than just a military purchase; it’s a strategic investment in Slovakia’s defense industry. A significant aspect of the deal includes plans for local production of the missiles in Slovakia.
“Preliminarily, there is an agreement that the missiles for this system, which are the largest item within the system, would be manufactured in Slovakia.”

Minister Kaliňák emphasized the system’s comprehensive coverage, saying, “At this moment, we can state that, following this approval, we will continue negotiations on the Israeli Barak system, which is intended to represent six batteries that should cover all basic strategic and even civilian targets within the air defense of the Slovak Republic.”

Timeline and Implementation
The timeline for this significant defense upgrade is ambitious but appears achievable. With the intergovernmental agreement expected to be finalized by the end of October 2024, the first deliveries are anticipated in late 2025. Minister Kaliňák confirmed the operational readiness target, stating, “By the beginning of 2026, Slovakia should have its first air defense systems fully deployed.”
