In a significant development, the U.S. State Department has greenlit a Foreign Military Sale to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, paving the way for the modernization of its RE-3A Tactical Airborne Surveillance System (TASS) aircraft. This strategic move, estimated at $582 million, underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to bolstering its airborne capabilities for enhanced surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Modernization Components

The proposed modernization encompasses a suite of enhancements aimed at elevating the RE-3A TASS aircraft’s capabilities. Key components include the integration of 7 Embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System (EGI) security devices with Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM) or M-Code capability. Additionally, 5 L3Harris BlackRock Communications Intelligence Sensor Suites are slated for incorporation, augmenting the aircraft’s electronic intelligence gathering capabilities.

The package also includes KY-100M narrowband/wideband secure communications terminals, KIV-77 MODE 4/5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) cryptographic appliques, and AN/PYQ-10 Simple Key Loaders. These components collectively aim to enhance secure communications and identification capabilities.

Principal Contractor

L3Harris Technologies, based in Greenville, TX, has been designated as the principal contractor for this ambitious modernization project. Leveraging its expertise, L3Harris will play a pivotal role in executing the hardware and software modifications, ensuring the seamless integration of advanced technologies into the RE-3A TASS aircraft.
