Rheinmetall and Lockheed Martin Unveil New GMARS

At Eurosatory 2024, German defense leader Rheinmetall and American giant Lockheed Martin are set to unveil their groundbreaking Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System (GMARS). This joint venture, initiated in 2023, combines Lockheed Martin’s 50-year rocket artillery expertise with Rheinmetall’s prowess in tactical vehicles and defense technologies. GMARS represents a significant leap forward in long-range rocket artillery, designed to meet growing global demands for advanced fire support solutions.

Unparalleled Versatility and Firepower

The GMARS system features a highly adaptable 2-pod launcher capable of deploying a wide array of munitions from the MLRS Family of Munitions (MFOM). This includes the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS), Extended Range GMLRS (ER GMLRS), Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), and the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM).

With the ability to launch missiles reaching ranges of over 400 km, GMARS offers unprecedented strategic reach. Future iterations promise even greater capabilities, including surface-launched cruise missiles exceeding 370 km range and compatibility with 122mm rockets.

Advanced Features for Modern Warfare

Designed for rapid deployment and relocation, GMARS embodies the “shoot and scoot” principle crucial in modern combat scenarios. Operated by a minimal crew of two, with cabin capacity for three, the system requires no outriggers for quick setup.

Its inertial navigation and GPS-aided targeting ensure pinpoint accuracy over various ranges. The integration of a boom and hoist system facilitates safe reloading in all weather conditions, enhancing operational flexibility.

GMARS is built on Rheinmetall’s robust 8×8 truck platform, offering excellent mobility and logistical compatibility with the HX family used by the German Army. This design choice ensures long-distance self-deployment capabilities and seamless integration with NATO forces, thanks to component commonality with M270/HIMARS systems.

The unveiling of GMARS at Eurosatory 2024 marks a significant milestone in mobile artillery technology. By combining Rheinmetall’s vehicle expertise with Lockheed Martin’s missile systems knowledge, GMARS is poised to redefine fire support capabilities for armed forces worldwide.
