Pakistan Navy Boosts Defense with Two New Warships

Pakistan Navy is set to induct two state of the art warships, PNS Babar and PNS Hunain, into its fleet. This expansion marks a crucial step in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defense and operational readiness in the Indian Ocean region.

The induction ceremony, scheduled for September 6th, coincides with Pakistan’s Defence Day, underscoring the national importance of this naval augmentation. President Asif Ali Zardari’s presence as the chief guest further emphasizes the strategic significance of this event.

PNS Babar, constructed in Turkey, represents the latest in naval technology. This 2,888-tonne vessel is part of the Babar class, a series of four ships equipped with advanced vertical launching systems. The ship’s construction journey began on June 4, 2020, with its launch on August 15, 2021, and final commissioning on September 23, 2023. PNS Babar’s multi-role capabilities allow it to engage in surface, underwater, and air combat simultaneously, making it a formidable addition to Pakistan’s naval arsenal.

Complementing PNS Babar is PNS Hunain, an offshore patrol vessel (OPV) built in Romania’s Damen Shipyard. Recently commissioned in July 2023, PNS Hunain brings cutting-edge electronic warfare systems, anti-ship and anti-air warfare weapons, and advanced self-protection mechanisms to the Pakistani fleet. Its arrival in Karachi on August 30th was marked by a ceremony at the Pakistan Navy Dockyard, highlighting its importance in enhancing maritime security patrols.

The induction of these warships is part of a broader naval expansion strategy. Three additional Babar class ships – PNS Badar, Tariq, and Khyber – are currently under construction. This expansion is facilitated by a Pakistan Turkey agreement, which sees two ships being manufactured in Istanbul and two in Karachi, showcasing international cooperation in defense production.

Vice Admiral Faisal Abbasi, Commodore Pakistan Fleet, emphasized that these additions significantly boost the navy’s capability to safeguard Pakistan’s maritime frontiers. The multi-purpose nature of these platforms, particularly their state of the art systems, will provide crucial support to Pakistan’s maritime security efforts in the Indian Ocean.

This naval reinforcement comes at a time of increasing focus on maritime security in the region. By enhancing its fleet with these advanced warships, Pakistan aims to strengthen its position in regional naval dynamics, ensure the protection of its maritime interests, and contribute to stability in the Indian Ocean.

As Pakistan continues to modernize its naval forces, the induction of PNS Babar and PNS Hunain represents a significant milestone in its journey towards a more robust and technologically advanced navy, capable of meeting the challenges of 21st-century maritime warfare and security.
