MBDA And Saab Modernize Taurus Missiles For Germany
MBDA Deutschland and Swedish defense giant Saab have announced a major collaboration to modernize the German Air Force’s Taurus cruise missiles. The modernization program will be executed through the Taurus GmbH joint venture, focusing on enhancing the missiles’ operational effectiveness and extending their service life.
Key Modernization Initiatives
The program encompasses crucial technological upgrades, primarily targeting the missiles’ guidance systems and long-range capabilities. These improvements are designed to meet the evolving demands of modern weapon systems while ensuring the missiles remain operationally effective. The modernization will extend the service life of these sophisticated weapons until 2045, providing Germany with a sustained long-range strike capability.
Technical Specifications and Capabilities
The current Taurus missiles in Germany’s arsenal are impressive pieces of military technology. Each missile weighs 1.4 tons and carries a formidable 450 kg warhead containing 100 kg of explosives. With a maximum range of approximately 500 kilometers, these missiles represent a crucial component of Germany’s military deterrent capabilities. Germany has reportedly ordered a total of 600 of these advanced missile systems.
Integration with Fighter Aircraft
As part of the modernization effort, the German Ministry of Defense has allocated funding for integrating the upgraded missiles into the Typhoon fighter jets’ weapon systems through the P4E upgrade program. This integration is expected to be operational by 2028-2029, significantly enhancing the Luftwaffe’s strike capabilities and operational flexibility.
Future Procurement Plans
Looking ahead, the German Ministry of Defense has ambitious plans to further strengthen its missile arsenal. The ministry is considering the procurement of the next-generation Taurus Neo cruise missiles, with plans to acquire 600 units at an estimated cost of €2.1 billion. However, current budget constraints have necessitated presenting this procurement project to the budget committee for consideration in the 2025 budget.
