Greece Approves $3.5B Deal for 20 F-35 Jets from US
Greece has taken a significant step in modernizing its air force by formally approving the purchase of 20 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters from the United States. This decision, announced on Thursday, is part of a major defense overhaul and represents a substantial investment in Greece’s military capabilities.
Deal Details
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed that the letter of acceptance for the F-35s has been signed and sent to the United States. The initial purchase of 20 aircraft, along with additional support, is valued at approximately $3.5 billion. Greece also maintains an option to acquire 20 additional F-35 jets, potentially bringing the total deal value to $8.6 billion.
Timeline and Strategic Importance
Delivery of the fifth-generation jets, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is expected to begin in 2028. Minister Dendias emphasized that this acquisition would create “a powerful deterrent presence” in the region, underscoring the strategic importance of the deal for Greece’s defense posture.

Context of Greece’s Military Modernization
This purchase is part of a decade-long program to overhaul Greece’s military capabilities, following a protracted financial crisis and ongoing tensions with neighboring Turkey. The modernization efforts also include the acquisition of advanced French-made Rafale fighter jets, with deliveries to the Greek Air Force having begun in 2021.
Regional Implications
The F-35 deal comes against the backdrop of complex regional dynamics, including Greece’s relationship with Turkey, a fellow NATO member. Notably, Turkey was removed from the F-35 program in 2019 due to its purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems, highlighting the geopolitical sensitivities surrounding advanced military technology in the region.
The U.S. State Department approved the potential sale of up to 40 F-35 aircraft to Greece in January, along with associated equipment and services. This approval allows for the possibility of future expansions to the Greek F-35 fleet beyond the initial 20 aircraft.
Greek Government’s Perspective
Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis described the current military modernization campaign as the most significant in “many decades,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s defense capabilities.
Greece’s formal approval of the F-35 purchase marks a significant milestone in its defense modernization efforts. This deal not only enhances Greece’s air force capabilities but also strengthens its strategic position within NATO and the broader Mediterranean region. As the program moves forward, it will likely have far-reaching implications for regional security dynamics and Greece’s military readiness.
