First F-35A for Poland Assembled by Lockheed Martin
The United States has reached a significant milestone in its defense cooperation with Poland, completing the assembly of the first F-35A Lightning II multirole fighter jet for the Polish Air Force. This achievement marks a crucial step in Poland’s military modernization efforts and strengthens NATO’s eastern flank.
The first F-35A for Poland, bearing the serial number AZ-01, rolled off Lockheed Martin’s assembly line in Texas in late July 2024. The aircraft is now undergoing final touches, including the application of a special stealth coating and painting. A presentation ceremony is scheduled for August 28, showcasing Poland’s entry into the elite group of F-35 operators.
Poland has officially named its F-35A variant “Husarz,” paying homage to the country’s famed winged cavalrymen. This designation reflects the aircraft’s advanced capabilities and Poland’s rich military heritage.
Poland’s agreement with the United States, signed in January 2020, includes the procurement of 32 F-35As in the Block 4 version with the Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3) package. This configuration represents the most advanced iteration of the F-35’s capabilities to date.
The $4.6 billion contract covers not only the aircraft but also comprehensive training for 24 pilots and 90 ground personnel. This investment ensures that Poland can fully leverage the F-35’s cutting-edge technology and maintain a high level of operational readiness.
Production of Poland’s F-35As began in April 2023 in Georgia, with the first six aircraft scheduled for completion in 2024-2025. The delivery process will continue through 2030, gradually bolstering Poland’s air defense capabilities.
Initially, the Polish F-35As will be based at Ebbing Air Force Base in Arkansas for pilot training. The first Husarz is expected to touch down on Polish soil at the Lask air base in 2026, marking a new era for the Polish Air Force.
Poland has already begun preparing its personnel for the F-35’s arrival. In 2021, the country initiated training programs for future F-35A pilots, ensuring a smooth transition to this advanced fighter jet.
