China Completes 9th Type 055 Destroyer, Prepares for Sea Trials

China’s naval modernization program has achieved yet another milestone with the completion of its ninth Type 055 destroyer, the CNS Dongguan. Reports suggest that the ship is ready to embark on sea trials, marking a significant step in China’s quest to dominate the seas. A Technological Leap

The Type 055 destroyer, classified as a cruiser by NATO and known domestically as the Renhai-class, represents a major leap in China’s naval capabilities. At approximately 180 meters in length and with a beam of 20 meters, these warships displace around 12,000–13,000 tons, making them some of the largest surface combatants in the world. Their size and advanced design enable them to perform a wide range of missions, including anti-aircraft, anti-ship, anti-submarine, and land-attack operations.

Equipped with the Type 346B AESA radar system, these destroyers boast cutting-edge surveillance and target-tracking capabilities. This radar operates in dual bands, providing unparalleled situational awareness across air and sea domains. Combined with an extensive vertical launch system (VLS) containing 112–128 cells, the Type 055 is armed with an array of missiles, including HHQ-9 surface-to-air missiles, YJ-18 anti-ship missiles, and CJ-10 land-attack cruise missiles.

Enhancing Strategic Reach

Since the commissioning of the first Type 055 destroyer, CNS Nanchang, in January 2020, China has systematically expanded its fleet. Each subsequent vessel, including CNS Lhasa, CNS Dalian, and CNS Anshan, has bolstered the PLAN’s blue-water capabilities. By 2023, the fleet included eight active ships, showcasing China’s ability to rapidly construct and commission state-of-the-art warships.

The Type 055 destroyers are built to operate in diverse environments, from escorting aircraft carriers to participating in independent missions. They are equipped with a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion system, allowing them to achieve speeds of up to 30 knots, providing both speed and endurance for extended operations.

Impact on Regional Security

The introduction of the ninth Type 055, CNS Dongguan, comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. These destroyers serve as a deterrent, ensuring the protection of China’s maritime interests and territorial claims. Their presence strengthens the PLAN’s ability to secure key sea lanes of communication (SLOCs) and respond to potential threats.

In the context of a potential conflict, such as an invasion of Taiwan, the Type 055 would play a crucial role. Its advanced missile systems can neutralize enemy ships, aircraft, and coastal defenses, paving the way for amphibious operations. Furthermore, its anti-submarine warfare capabilities are critical in countering threats from submarines that could disrupt naval blockades or invasion forces.
