Aselsan Secures $616M To Boost Turkiye Air Defense
Turkish defense giant Aselsan has secured a $616-million investment to develop cutting-edge equipment for Turkey’s ambitious “Steel Dome” air defense system. This funding, provided by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology, underscores Ankara’s commitment to bolstering national security through indigenous technological advancements.
The investment will support radar, sensor, smart munition, and air defense technology development, ensuring Turkiye self-reliance in defense production. Additionally, Aselsan will expand its research and development (R&D) facilities, enhancing its export potential and positioning itself as a key global player in the defense sector.
Turkey’s Steel Dome System
Turkiye has significantly reduced its reliance on foreign defense imports in recent years, opting to strengthen domestic defense production. In August 2023, Ankara announced the Steel Dome project, designed to create a multi-layered air defense network to protect the nation’s airspace from aerial threats.
The Steel Dome system will integrate defense systems by combining radars, sensors, and weaponry into a unified defense architecture. It will feature multi-layered protection, similar to Israel’s Iron Dome, with layered defenses to counter various aerial threats, including missiles, drones, and aircraft. Artificial intelligence (AI) integration will enhance response time, accuracy, and threat detection.
The Steel Dome initiative is being developed by leading Turkish defense firms, including Aselsan, Roketsan, and MKE, alongside the TÜBİTAK SAGE research institute.
Strengthening Air Defense Capabilities
Aselsan has played a crucial role in advancing Turkiye air defense technology, having developed multiple high-tech defense systems in recent years.
Recently, Aselsan successfully conducted the first live-fire test of the Göksur Point Defense Missile System in March 2024. Designed to counter low-altitude threats such as cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, aircraft, and drones, it significantly boosts Turkiye naval and land-based air defense.
In 2024, Aselsan also delivered the ALP-300G Portable Early Warning Radar System to the Turkish Armed Forces. This system enhances aerial reconnaissance, border surveillance, fire control, and weapon detection, improving early threat detection and response capabilities.

Implications For Defense Industry
With the Steel Dome project and Aselsan’s continued innovations, Turkiye is solidifying its position as a self-sufficient defense powerhouse. The $616-million investment will not only boost national security but also drive defense exports, strengthening Turkiye footprint in the global arms market.
As Turkiye enhances its air defense infrastructure, the country is set to become a key defense technology exporter, contributing to international security while reducing reliance on foreign military systems.
The Steel Dome air defense system represents a significant leap forward in Turkiye military capabilities. With substantial government backing and Aselsan’s technological expertise, Ankara is well on its way to achieving airspace dominance and strategic defense independence in the coming years.
