Turkish Aerospace Delivers First Gokbey Helicopter
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has successfully delivered the first T625 Gokbey utility helicopter to the country’s military police, marking a significant milestone in national technological advancement.
The Gokbey Helicopter Program
The October 29th delivery, strategically timed with Turkey’s national day, represents more than just a routine aircraft transfer. It symbolizes Turkey’s growing capabilities in developing advanced military technology completely in-house. The T625 Gokbey, a 6 metric ton twin engine medium helicopter, stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to indigenous defense manufacturing.
Key Features of the Gokbey Helicopter
- Classification: Medium utility helicopter comparable to Leonardo’s AW139 and Airbus’ H160
- Primary Purpose: Replacement for aging Bell UH-1 Iroquois/Huey platforms
- Strategic Goal: Domestic and international market penetration
Ambitious Delivery
TAI has ambitious plans for the Gokbey program, with a comprehensive rollout strategy:
- Two additional helicopters expected before year-end
- 20 confirmed orders for various government agencies in 2025
- Future plans include 57 more helicopters for military and security organizations
- 100 aircraft planned for air ambulance services, with deliveries starting in 2026
Engine Development
While currently utilizing a US made Honeywell/Rolls-Royce LHTEC T800 engine, Turkey is actively developing its domestic alternative. TUSAS Engine Industries is testing the TS1400 powerplant, with hopes of offering a fully indigenous engine by 2028.

National Leadership Perspective
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the strategic significance of the Gokbey program, stating, “We no longer seek anyone’s permission when taking steps regarding our national security.” Haluk Gorgun, head of Turkey’s Defense Industries Agency, described the delivery as a pivotal moment that establishes Turkey as a “brand in the global defense industry.”
Overcoming Challenges
The delivery comes in the wake of a tragic terror attack on TAI’s Ankara headquarters, which claimed five lives, including a Gokbey program technician. Despite this challenge, the successful helicopter delivery underscores the resilience of Turkey’s defense technology sector.
The Gokbey helicopter program represents more than a technological achievement. It signals Turkey’s growing ambition to develop advanced, indigenous defense capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign military technology.
