MBDA Unveils Prototype Man-Portable Air Defense System
European defense company MBDA has recently unveiled a prototype of a new man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) at the Farnborough International Airshow. This development marks a significant advancement in short-range air defense capabilities, particularly for the Italian Army.
Key Features of the New MANPADS
The system boasts several cutting-edge features. It offers ultra-short range capability, designed to engage a variety of aerial threats, including fighters, helicopters, and small drones. The missile achieves supersonic speeds, enhancing its effectiveness against fast-moving targets. It employs “fire and forget” technology, allowing operators to launch the missile and immediately seek cover, improving survivability on the battlefield.

An advanced all-weather homing head with image processing capabilities significantly increases its resistance to interference and improves hit probability. Additionally, the new system is designed to seamlessly integrate with existing remote-controlled systems using the Mistral 3 MANPADS and MBDA’s Sky Warden anti-drone system.
Development Context
The development of this new MANPADS is in response to requirements set by the Italian Army last year. While MBDA has not disclosed detailed specifications, the system represents a significant advancement in portable air defense technology.
MBDA’s Position in the MANPADS Market
MBDA is one of the few global manufacturers of man-portable air defense systems. The company’s current flagship product, the Mistral 3 MANPADS, introduced in 2018, has seen widespread adoption. A recent multi-national procurement agreement involving Estonia, Belgium, Cyprus, France, and Hungary underscores its popularity. Furthermore, Estonia’s provision of Mistral 3 systems to Ukraine as part of military assistance highlights its strategic importance.
Mistral 3 Specifications
The Mistral 3 system offers impressive capabilities, with a range of 0.5 to 7.5 km and a maximum altitude of 3 km. It features all-weather and day/night operability, along with an infrared seeker for target acquisition.
MBDA’s unveiling of this new MANPADS prototype demonstrates the ongoing evolution of short-range air defense systems. As aerial threats become more diverse and sophisticated, particularly with the increased use of drones, such advancements in portable air defense technology are likely to play a crucial role in future military operations and national defense strategies.
